‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to success with the Basque club
Whenhe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta played in England, an young representing the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in September 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he appeared in British turf, against the Black Cats two months later, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City six weeks after that, indeed, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “Actually,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did their duty: they substituted him.
“I became very upset,” the attacker says, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I have no idea the validity, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the training ground, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to the airport and a further journey to England, now to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a challenging campaign for Athletic, due in part to the requirements of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. But, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a final at home by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the one-time rival player his father and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he suffered a serious knee problem, being released, a drop in category and a call back before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his first game and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and my knee gave way.
“A massive setback but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it helps. You develop habits you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then head home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, you have everything, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact countless occasions. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. He left in tears in 2020, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears for your role, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. All the more so after the previous season which, sometimes, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
