Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the company, and eagerly await observing their advancement".
Summers, who once presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted Summers' determination to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company commented.
Congressional Action
This announcement comes after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on the case.
The bill will then move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has indicated he expects to approve the measure, after modifying his stance on the issue following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications showed that the professor and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to link Summers to prominent world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were shared with the public, Summers stated he accepted "total ownership for my misguided decision to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish faith and repair bonds with the individuals closest to me".
Career Background
The economist served in leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He headed Harvard from five years and is still a academic there. When declaring his step-down from public roles recently on this week, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was no longer connected with the organization.
The former official joined the board of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
