Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early names under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the team's 10-match winless beginning to the top-flight campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic links to the team - are among the names to be considered by the club leadership.
Edwards is presently at another club, which would create a potential hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town manager - who made over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they begin the search of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is currently unemployed which means the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
